Almost 500 years ago, "European colonization (of the Americas) shattered the old indigenous order through war, settlement and, most notably, disease."
An estimated 90% -- that is, nine out of every ten people -- lost their
lives, which is why some refer to that time as "The Great Dying."
During
this time in Mexico, amid a series of pandemics, a group of scholars
sealed themselves off in a convent and wrote the indigenous history of
their people. You can read The Los Angeles Times article about their work here.
Beginning
today, I encourage you to journal about your experiences during the
coronavirus pandemic. I will continue to offer journal topics that
relate to our shared reading, and I will also include a note that
reminds you of this opportunity.
Writing things down is
important. As we talked about, people even see their food
and their time use differently when they record the facts in writing.
Don't be lazy -- your memory is unreliable.
When you think about it, what can you remember about what you did every
day last week? What your little sister said to make you smile, or what
your family ate for dinner, or how you felt about what's going on? In a
few short (months? years?) the coronavirus pandemic will be a story -- a
history -- just like 9/11 or World War II. Unlike those events,
however, for you this is not just history. This will be YOUR history.
Get
a pen, right now, find a notebook or a piece of paper, and capture this
moment so that your grandchildren don't have to rely on someone else's
version to understand what these days are like.

ReplyDeleteI honestly find it fascinating that people from 500 years, despite not having the modern technology that we have today, were able to realize that something was not right and that sealing themselves from the world meant the difference between life or death and even more that they chose to keep a written record of what they experienced.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing that even though not having technology, they were still able to figure things out while having their lives at risk. They knew sealing themselves was the best option and even recorded what they went through.
ReplyDeleteEven though there society was threatened by the plague it was very noble of the scholars to isolate themselves from the outside world in order to keep there peoples history and knowledge alive even if it meant they wouldn't survive to tell it themselves, they still had hope that at least there volumes would survive to tell the story.Even though they felt alienated they still managed to push through and keep on recording and writing there stories knowing that if they where to leave there convent there was a very low chance of survival.
ReplyDeleteIts awesome how people with people from a long time ago were able to still go thru a pandmic when there was no technology to help them out on how to figure out what to do while there was a pandemic.
ReplyDeleteIt is amazing how people manged to go through a pandemic like we are right now but very differently. We have enough stuff to go through this while they didn't which is very impressive.
ReplyDeleteUnderstood.
ReplyDeleteIf they went though a pandemic with no technology then we can go though this one also, because we do have technology.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting to see how they got through their pandemic all the way back then.
ReplyDeleteIts really interesting on how something that was written so long ago is still here to this day
ReplyDeleteIts crazy to think about what the world is going through right now, and more crazy to think about the fact that something similar has happened before. I cant imagine going through a pandemic 500 years ago, even with all the technology we have today, and opportunities, we are still struggling more than ever. Its amazing how even with all the death that came, people were able to come out alive. They were smart enough to realize how to go through a pandemic. its interesting how we learn to adapt to unexpected situations like that, and record them on paper, knowing its important to document times in history like that.
ReplyDeleteI find it very amazing that even though not having technology, they were still able to figure things out while having their lives at risk. We should be grateful that we have all the tools now that people didn't have 500 years ago because it make life so much easier now than it would've been 500 years ago.
ReplyDeleteI find it amazing that even back then they had to go through something similar to whats happening right now and they got through it.
ReplyDeleteI find it amazing that we have been through something like this in the past and now. Some of them didn't make it but they didn't make that stop them from surviving.
ReplyDeleteThis article reminds me of the importance of documenting things and writing them down to look back at it later. If none did this in the past we wouldn't have the same knowledge we have today
ReplyDeleteIt's sort of weird that we wish to write things down to go look back on because our memories would soon fail us and you won't have an accurate idea of things even though you experienced it first-handedly. It makes me write more and write about my experience in life so I can know what actually happened before my brain/memory starts to fail on me.
ReplyDeleteThis story was interesting because we can take look back at this story later and we are surprised with the corona-virus that is happening right now but with the story we know that something similar happened before and they survive.
ReplyDeleteIt was interesting to see how they sought out an idea and followed through with it to better themselves and their civilizations. I like how they detected a problem with certain people's health and acted upon it.
ReplyDeleteI realized I never commented on this. But I remember this was very interesting, because we are also in a pandemic, and man of us are keeping diaries, to tell our grandkids how bored we were, and how we'd clean our room twice a day and watch a lot of TV because we had nothing better to do. I for one am learning two different instruments so that's fun.
